As stewards of Duke’s resources, we exercise sound judgment and use data prudently and ethically.

Successful data governance requires the collaboration and contributions of individuals in various roles, including data stewards, managers and users. See Duke’s Data Classification Standard for definitions of data management roles.

The Institutional Data Governance Committee (IDGC) includes representation from across the university with a goal of enabling and facilitating effective use and sharing of institutional data through the advancement of data tooling, governance, standards, and awareness. The committee is comprised of members from the Office of the University Registrar, Office of Institutional Research (OIR), Finance, Human Resources, Office of Information Technology (OIT), Student Information Services and Systems (SISS), IT Security Office (ITSO), Office of Audit, Risk and Compliance (OARC), and other departments.

The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) supports Institutional Data Governance principles and webpages administratively and seeks consensus across the institution in determining data of record. OIR is not responsible for the adoption, implementation, or enforcement of Institutional Data Governance Principles. See Request Data Access to request access to data.
